Literacy

Family literacy is a very important part of our Head Start program.  We support families in this area through many fun and interactive programs and events throughout the year.

Each child in our program has the opportunity to choose a book to take home and keep, three times each program year.  A parent RIF committee chooses the themes and book titles for each of the three book distributions.  Parents, staff, and community members all take part in making each book distribution a fun, exciting experience for children to help them learn that reading is indeed, a fun experience.

As a part of the RIF Family of Readers program, we hold a two week "Twice upon a Time" reading challenge each year.  All classroom teachers read at least one book daily with children in the classroom, and all Head Start parents/guardians are challenged to also read at least one book daily at home with their child.  Many children and families enjoy this so much that entire classrooms extend the reading challenge well beyond the two weeks!

First founded in 1992, First Book grants provide our program with free books for Head Start children to take home and keep for their very own.

Our program offers parents an exciting selection of books that may be checked out from our Parent Lending Library through Miss Alice (room 7) upstairs at the Lincoln Center.  These books are on a wide variety of topics that we believe will be of great interest and assistance to our Head Start parents!

A listing of the available books may be viewed online by clicking on the image to the left, or may be viewed in a binder in the Parent Room (room 10) upstairs at the Lincoln Center.

FRED reading sheets are available to all children and their male role models all program year!

We also can help with other types of educational needs and interests for adults - all any Head Start parent or guardian need to to take advantage of these offers is to speak with your teacher or family services staff member and you are on your way to a better education, a brighter future, bigger paychecks, and so much more!
